Renting a Vehicle in Ketchikan (or from anyone other than us :))
When you come to Ketchikan, renting a car is a great way to get around town and stow your gear while you
explore. You can rent a car from several places either at the Ketchikan Airport, or on the Mainland of
Ketchikan. There is a fee to bring the vehicle across and back to the Airport of the shuttle ferry, so keep that
in mind.

Most places in Ketchikan won't allow you take a vehicle to Prince of Wales Island. The ones who do have
you sign a waiver that makes you completely responsible for the vehicle once it leaves Ketchikan. This
means that if the vehicle breaks down due to no fault of your own, you are still responsible to bring it back to
them in Ketchikan as you rented it. They have no way to assist you if you have a problem on the Island.

Compare that to our solution of providing you with a Satellite Messenger with your vehicle that you can use
to send us your GPS location should a problem arise.

Also, Ketchikan has a very limited road system. There is about 50 miles of almost entirely paved road you
can explore. Vehicles from Ketchikan use 4-ply street tires because that is all they need.

We only use the best high-ply tires from Les-Schuab we can buy. We offer tire insurance as well, because
Prince of Wales Island is made up of 1000's of miles of un-paved roads. And the surface of these roads is
made from "shot rock" that creates shards of small rocks that are often sharp as razors. On POW Island, you
don't need to buy arrow heads, you can just find them on the roads when you look down! Even if you plan on
staying on paved roads, remnants of these rocks carry over from the roads and shoulders, and therefore are
on the paved surfaces as well.

Providing you with a Satellite Messenger is our physical commitment of quality to your trips' investment;
nobody we have ever heard of provides you this in a rental car. And we don't want to come save you in the
middle of nowhere, so we make sure our equipment is extremely well maintained and suited for Island
travel. We check the vehicle over before each rental and provide extras like a first-aid kit, emergency
blankets, a flint and flashlights. This is not your normal rental vehicle, and we don't approach our business in
the typical manner.

So before you rent from anyone else, especially in Ketchikan, think about the liabilities you are taking on
and the value your getting. We strive to be the best at everything including the price, so we shouldn't loose
your interest there.

But a bad decision on your rental vehicle provider on the Island and you might find it would've been
cheaper on your vacation to have bought a car vs rented one on the Island.
